Join us on the first Monday of every month for the Broadway Book Club, hosted by Broadway United Church of Christ at 2504 Broadway on the corner of 93rd Street -- we meet downstairs in the Undercroft.
Our next meeting will be on June 2 at 6:30 pm. Refreshments and edible delights will be served* and ALL are invited!
Beforehand, please read the novel by Marilynne Robinson, GILEAD.
In the Bible, the balm of Gilead is a rarity, yearned for in vain. In the gospel song, it flows copiously, making the wounded whole and healing sin-sick souls. Both properties are true of Marilynne Robinson's second novel, Gilead; long-awaited and altogether unlike any other work of fiction (even her own).
Fictional character John Ames is a 76-year-old minister in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956. His narration of the novel is through the diary/letter he is writing for his 7-year-old son. He reflects on the faith of his father and Grandfather, as well as his own profound love for and wonder in things of this earth. His descriptions of the beauty of seemingly mundane activities and scenes are almost startling in their loveliness -- Ames's evident delight in the beauty of this world speaks to his recognition of holiness in the everyday.
Gilead is a book of small beauties and large truths, the rare novel that is unafraid to talk about matters of faith in terms both profound and significant, without either trivializing or sentimentalizing their importance.
Robinson's prose is luminous and brilliant, full of passages that beg to be savored, shared, and remembered for their wisdom and their acknowledgment of the presence of the divine.
