THE POLITICS OF JESUS

...There has also been a lot of discussion about the dangers of churches becoming too political. The problem is not in having a political church, but in having a partisan one. I believe in that ‘wall’ that separates church from state. It keeps both safe and free. Partisanship has no place in the church… but politics sure does! The Gospel is political. Jesus got into trouble with the ‘powers that be’ precisely because his message had such sweeping political ramifications. You cannot lift up the rights of the poor, oppressed and forgotten without threatening those systems and people preserving the status quo.
Is that a political message? You bet! Does it belong in the church? Absolutely. Can you think of a better place to proclaim the Gospel?
